The Sixth Sense

ESP or extrasensory perception is commonly called "the sixth sense." It involves the ability to receive information without the use of the five senses. This also includes information about the past and the future as well as those that seem to come from an alternate reality or dimension.

ESP as the sixth sense differs from the rest of the recognized senses in that there is no specific location in the body that receives extrasensory information. It is also not affected by time, location, age, education, or intelligence. Aside from being referred to as the "sixth sense," ESP has also been called "cryptesthesia" during the 19th century. The term was eventually relabeled as "relesthesia." It was Louisa Rhine, the wife of Duke University psychologist J.B. Rhine, who proposed that ESP starts in the unconscious. Other theories about ESP include the theory of macrophages as the body’s extrasensory organs. Macrophages are cells that play a role in immunity and are present in the bone marrow, connective tissue, and lymph nodes.

Other theories on ESP propose that the ability is born in an individual, lsuch as the natural ability to draw or reach very high notes. This is often the theory applied to seers, diviners, and mediums who claim to have inherited the ability from their ancestors. A related theory explains the sixth sense as the remnants of a primordial sense, which was present in ancient cultures, but started to decline as the culture advanced.

Believers of ESP say that the sixth sense is present in every individual. However, in some cases, the ability may be too weak to be detected.
