Processes in Mysticism

The mystical perspective can be developed through the process described by mystic and author Evelyn Underhill. The development of the Universal Mystic way is done through a series of five steps which begin with awakening and ends with either the third stage or the stage of illumination, or the fifth stage, called the stage of union with the object of love.

In awakening, the individual becomes conscious of a divine reality or entity. This is followed by the second stage of purgation, where the individual becomes conscious of his imperfections and tries to compensate through self-disciple. Feelings of mortification typically arise in this stage.

The third stage, called illumination, is also the final stage for some mystics. Here the individual becomes conscious of a transcendent order and can now visualize the reality of a new heaven and a new earth. The fourth stage is called the dark night of the soul. Here, the individual reaches the final stage of purification. Feelings of confusion and helplessness as well as distance from the presence of God are typically experienced in this stage.

The final stage is called the union with the object of love or God. Here the person reaches the transcendental level and is filled up with the Divine Will. In Christianity, this effort to enter into the Divine Will is largely thought to be hindered by sin, shame or remorse, and can only be overcome by repentance and the giving –up of the things, thoughts, and behaviors. It is only through this that reestablishment of the Diving connection and attainment of the last and final stage can be done.
