Precognition in Movies
Precognition is a popular subject in movies, particularly because no solid scientific explanation has yet been developed to explain the presence of this ability in individuals. The conflicting views on precognition also contribute to its mystery and make it such a good base for a movie plot.
Popular movies that revolve around precognition include "The Matrix" series, "Next," starring Nicholas Cage, "Dream Catcher," "Scorpion King," "Minority Report," and "Final Destination." The Matrix series starred Keanu Reeves who played Neo, the man prophesied to save mankind from the machines that controlled the earth. In "Next," Nicholas Cage played Cris Johnson, a man who spent his childhood being tested by government scientists until he was able to escape, change his identity, and start over as a Las Vegas magician. He manages to use his powers to eke out a small fortune at the blackjack tables, but soon encounters a vision of Los Angeles being annihilated by a nuclear blast. He is soon being pursued by FBI agents led by Julianne Moore who tries to convince Johnson to use his powers to avert the disaster. In "Final Destination," the main characters see the deaths of friends before they happen. This happens after they all cheat death when they were prevented from taking a flight on a plane, which crashed a few moments later.
Precognition is also present in "Star Wars." Both Jedi and Sith have the ability to foresee the future if they are able to master the Force. Precognition is also a popular theme in TV shows such as "Supernatural," "Heroes," and Frank Herbert’s "Dune" Series.
