Historical Accounts on Bilocation

Bilocation is the state of being present in more than one location at the same time. Bilocation is an ancient phenomenon, although the practice of bilocation as a science has only started gaining ground in the past 20 years.

The state of bilocation has been claimed to be a common experience of mystics, yogis, and holy persons, and various historical accounts of individuals who have exhibited this state has been recorded. Famous persons thought to have experienced bilocation include St. Severus of Ravenna, St. Anthony of Padua, and St. Pio of Italy. St. Pio of Italy is perhaps one of the individuals with detailed accounts of his experiences as recorded by Father Durante who witnessed St. Pio’s bilocations multiple times.

Bilocation has also been noted throughout the years to occur more often in times when the individual is about to die. Historical accounts of bilocation can be found in the Bible and various literature. Records on the witch persecutions in Salem during the 17th century reported events when those accused of witchcraft were said to appear in the dreams and visions of witnesses. These accounts were often referred to as "spectral evidence."

Accounts of bilocations all throughout the history of the Catholic Church are also present, such as the experiences of St. Alphonsus Ligouri who claimed to have travelled to the deathbed of Pope Clement XIV, while he was preparing for mass. Bilocation in Islam has also been recorded. It is believed that some senior members possessed the ability to appear in two places at the same time.
