Digit Summing in Numerology

Digit summing is the operation used in determining key numbers in numerology. Key numbers are one-digit numbers or two-digit multiples of 11 that are laden with meanings that can be used to interpret one’s personality, desires, goals, and even the future.

Digit summing is fairly easy in numerology. The idea is simple: digits must be summed up until the end sum is reduced to a single digit or to two-digit multiples of 11 (including 11). Numerology deals with two main elements in determining one’s personal characteristics and life “truths”: the person’s name and his or her birth date. These elements are totaled to come up with key numbers governing a particular person’s life.

Digit summing in names involves assigning numbers to each letter of the alphabet, using these number assignments in spelling out one’s name, adding up all these numbers, and simplifying the answer to come up with a valid key number.

Different types of numerology make use of different number assignments to letters of the alphabet. One of the most commonly used is this chart:

1-A, J, S 2-B, K, T 3-C, L, U 4-D, M, V 5-E, N, W 6-F, O, X 7-G, P, Y 8-H, Q, Z 9-I, R

For example, the numerological sum for someone named Anna Mayer Smith’s name shall have the following calculation:

A+N+N+A+M+A+Y+E+R+S+M+I+T+H 1+5+5+1+4+1+7+5+9+1+4+9+2+8 = 62 6+2 = 8

The numerological sum for Anna Mayer Smith’s name is 8.

Digit summing in a birth date is easier. If, for example, Anna Mayer Smith was born on June 1, 1934, the computation would be:

6 (for June)+1+1+9+3+4 = 24 2+4 = 6

Her birth date numerological sum is 6.

After determining these numbers, they are then interpreted using a set of meanings and interpretations appended to each number. Different types of numerology attach different sets of meanings to numbers.
