Skeptics of distant readings believe that distant readings are basically guesses. They argue that “accurate” readings are only coincidental. These distant reading skeptics say that people who believe in distant readings and other similar methods consider “true” readings as accurate predictions, while ditching those that weren’t “inaccurate.” Skeptics think that people have the tendency to believe what reinforces their beliefs and wants, and ignore those that do not. Therefore, believers of distant readings can choose to find explanations on why some of the predictions that psychics gave them did not realize.
